More than a month after the start of free agency, former Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Chris Hairston announced Wednesday, via his Twitter account, that he will be signing with the San Diego Chargers. (Update: The Chargers officially announced the signing of Hairston on Wednesday night.)

Selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL draft, Hairston appeared in 41 games for Buffalo over the course of four seasons. He started seven games as a rookie and eight games in 2012, but spent the entire 2013 season on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list, then played just 38 snaps this past season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Because 2013 did not count as an accrued season for Hairston, he was set to be a restricted free agent this offseason. The Bills decided not to tender him a contract, however, which made him an unrestricted free agent.

According to OverTheCap.com (h/t Mike Wanhatalo on Twitter), Hairston’s departure will not factor into the compensatory pick formula because he was not tendered a contract. So far, the Bills have lost five unrestricted free agents from last season and added four new free agents, which puts them in position to receive a compensatory pick, but only if they do not sign another free agent before May 12, unless another one of their own free agents signs with another team.

In San Diego, Hairston projects as a swing backup to starting offensive tackles King Dunlap and D.J. Fluker. At 6’6″ and 330 pounds, Hairston has the massive size that the Chargers evidently favor at the offensive tackle position. It is also possible that Hairston could factor into the competition for a starting guard spot opposite Orlando Franklin.
